Best Use and Compatibility
This cane is a good choice for replacing worn or broken cane on hand-caned chair seats. It is meant for chairs where the cane passes through holes in the frame and is woven by hand across the seat.
If you are repairing multiple chairs or need more material for a larger project, the chair cane common 3.5mm 1000 ft coil may be a better option.
For chairs that only need extra edge material, 4mm binder cane can be used as a separate finishing cane when the main seat weaving is already complete.
Measuring Before You Order
Before ordering, measure the diameter of the drilled holes and the spacing between holes. This product is listed for 5/16” drilled holes with about 7/8” spacing from the center of one hole to the center of the next.
Do not use this product for pressed cane seats, pre-woven cane panels, or chairs that require spline in a groove. Those projects need a different cane webbing and spline setup.
If the seat frame needs a slightly heavier edge finish, compare 5mm binder cane with your existing chair before choosing a separate binder size.
Installation Notes
Soak the strand cane only long enough to make it flexible before weaving. Avoid over-soaking, because overly soft cane can stretch too much and become harder to keep even.
Remove old cane pieces, broken ends, and dried material from the holes before starting. A caning chisel can help clean old cane from the chair frame during seat repair preparation.
For hand-caning work, the C.S. Osborne caning tool No.406 can help guide cane through the seat holes with less finger strain.
Care After Weaving
After the chair seat is woven, let the cane dry fully before regular use. As natural cane dries, it tightens into place.
Keep the finished chair in a dry indoor or covered area. Avoid long exposure to direct sunlight, heavy moisture, or high heat, because these conditions can dry out or weaken natural cane over time.
