What This Reed Spline Is Used For
Reed spline is a wedge-shaped strip used around the edge of cane webbing. After the cane webbing is placed into the chair groove, the spline is pressed into place to help hold the webbing firmly.
This product is a good match when your chair needs #8 reed spline for a 3/16-inch groove. For larger or smaller groove sizes, compare it with spline for cane chairs before choosing the final size.
Measuring Before Installation
Remove the old spline and clean the groove fully before measuring. A clean groove gives a more accurate size and helps the new spline sit properly.
If you are repairing a complete seat, a pressed cane webbing kit may be a better choice when you need cane mesh, spline, wedges, and instructions together. For removing old spline and dried glue, a caning chisel can help prepare the groove before installing new material.
Installation Notes
Soak or soften the reed spline according to your project instructions before bending it around corners. Do not force dry spline into the groove, because it may crack or damage the chair frame.
This spline is designed for pressed cane webbing repairs only. For hand-caned chairs with drilled holes, you will need strand cane instead of spline. Wooden pegs for chair caning are useful for holding strands during hand-caning work, but they are not a replacement for reed spline.
Buyer Guidance
Choose this product if your chair has a routed groove and needs a #8, 3/16-inch spline. It is especially useful when replacing old spline during cane webbing seat repair.
Before purchasing, check your chair style, groove size, and existing cane material to confirm this #8 spline is the correct match.
