What This Chair Caning Kit Is Used For
This kit is designed for basic chair seat repair where the cane is woven by hand through individual drilled holes. It gives beginners the main supplies needed to learn the traditional chair caning process without buying each item separately.
Use this kit when the chair frame is solid, the drilled holes are clean, and the old cane has been removed. If you need extra refill material for future projects, compare this kit with chair cane fine 2.5mm 270 ft coil before ordering more cane.
Before You Start
Check the chair seat carefully before using this kit. The holes should be drilled through the frame, not routed into a groove. If your chair has a groove around the edge, you need pressed cane webbing instead of hand-caning supplies.
Remove old cane pieces from the holes before weaving. A caning chisel may help clean out old material when the previous cane is stuck or difficult to remove.
Installation and Weaving Notes
Soak the cane before weaving so it becomes flexible and easier to work through the chair holes. Keep the cane damp while working, but avoid over-soaking or forcing dry cane because it may split.
Use the included pegs to hold strands in place while you work. For additional hand support and cane positioning, C.S. Osborne 423 basket weaving tool with eye can be useful on tight or detailed areas.
Helpful Add-On Supplies
For larger projects or future chair repairs, chair cane common 3.5mm 270 ft coil may be useful when a different cane size is needed. Always match the cane size to the chair’s hole spacing before ordering replacement material.
For adjusting cane during repair work, C.S. Osborne caning tool No.406 can help move cane into position with less hand strain.
Care After Caning
After the chair is fully woven, let the cane dry naturally before regular use. As natural cane dries, it tightens and forms a firmer seat.
Keep the finished chair indoors and away from heavy moisture, direct heat, and long sunlight exposure. Light cleaning with a dry or slightly damp cloth is usually enough for normal care.
