Best Use and Compatibility
This kit is best for Breuer-style chair seat repair and other chairs that use pressed cane with spline. Before ordering, check the edge of your chair seat. If there is a groove around the seat opening, this type of kit may be suitable.
If your chair has individual drilled holes around the frame, do not use this kit. That type of chair requires strand chair cane, not pressed cane webbing.
For larger repair projects, compare this kit with cane webbing standard size fine open 1/2 mesh to choose the correct cane webbing size and quantity.
Measuring Before Ordering
Measure the open area of the chair seat before buying. This kit includes an 18” x 18” piece of pressed cane, but the usable seat area should generally be no larger than about 17” square so there is enough material to fit into the groove.
Also check the groove width before installing the spline. The included #7 spline is approx. 5.75mm, but older chairs may have grooves that vary slightly in width.
If you only need extra cane webbing for a larger project, 50 ft fine open cane webbing roll may be a better option than a single repair kit.
Installation Notes
Remove the old cane and old spline carefully before starting the repair. Clean the groove so the new cane and spline can sit properly. A caning chisel can help remove old spline and dried glue from the channel.
Soak the pressed cane before installation so it becomes flexible enough to fit into the groove. Do not force dry cane into place, because it may crack or split during installation.
Use the included wood wedges to hold the cane in place while fitting the spline. If you need replacement wedges for future repairs, caning wedges 10-pack can be used for similar pressed cane installation jobs.
Helpful Tool Option
For moving cane into position and working around tight edges, C.S. Osborne caning tool No.406 can be useful during chair caning and repair work. Use tools carefully so the cane, spline groove, and chair frame are not damaged.
Care After Repair
After installation, allow the cane seat to dry fully before regular use. Natural cane tightens as it dries, so avoid sitting on the chair too soon.
Keep the repaired chair in a dry indoor area. Too much moisture, direct heat, or strong sunlight can shorten the life of natural cane material.
