Best Use and Compatibility
This cane is intended for hand caning chairs that have individual drilled holes around the seat opening. It is not the correct choice for chairs that use a groove and spline around the edge.
Use chair cane fine fine 2.25mm only when your chair pattern calls for a smaller cane size.
For chairs with a wider frame opening or larger finishing needs, check the original chair pattern carefully before choosing a different binder size.
Measuring Before You Order
Measure the hole diameter and the distance from the center of one hole to the center of the next hole before selecting cane. The current product detail points to 5/16” drilled holes with about 7/8” spacing from center to center.
The included 4mm binder cane is used for finishing the woven seat edge after the main chair cane pattern is complete.
If your chair needs a thicker edge finish, compare 5mm binder cane with your existing chair frame before ordering separate binder material.
Installation Notes
Soak the cane only as needed to make it flexible before weaving. Do not over-soak the material, because overly soft cane can become harder to control while pulling through the seat holes.
A caning chisel can help remove old cane, old spline, or dried material from a chair frame before starting a new repair.
Work slowly around the chair frame, keep the cane tension even, and avoid forcing dry cane through tight holes. If the chair frame is cracked, loose, or damaged, repair the frame before weaving the new seat.
Care After Weaving
After the seat is woven, allow the cane to dry fully so it can tighten naturally. Trim loose ends neatly and avoid using the chair until the cane is dry and secure.
Keep the finished chair indoors or in a dry covered area. Too much moisture, direct heat, or long sunlight exposure may shorten the life of natural cane.
For larger chair or basket projects, 6mm binder cane may be useful when a wider finishing cane is required.
