Best Use and Compatibility
This fine 2.5mm chair cane is a good choice for chairs with smaller drilled holes and closer hole spacing. The 1000 ft coil is useful for larger repair work, multiple chair seats, or keeping extra material on hand for future hand-caning projects.
If you only need a smaller amount of cane for one chair, compare this larger coil with a shorter chair cane option before ordering.
For edge finishing or replacement border material, 4mm binder cane may also be useful if you need extra binder beyond the strands included with this product.
Measuring Before You Order
Before ordering, measure both the drilled hole diameter and the distance from the center of one hole to the center of the next hole. This product is listed for 3/16” drilled holes spaced about 9/16” center to center.
Do not use this cane for pressed cane seats, sheet cane panels, or chairs that have a groove around the seat opening. Those projects usually need cane webbing, spline, and installation wedges instead of individual strand cane.
If your chair has larger holes or wider spacing, compare it with chair cane common 3.5mm 1000 ft coil before choosing the cane size.
Installation Notes
Soak the chair cane until it becomes flexible enough to weave without cracking. Avoid soaking it too long, because overly soft cane can stretch and become harder to keep even during weaving.
Remove old cane pieces from the holes before starting the new seat. A caning chisel can help clean out old cane, dried material, or broken strand ends from the frame.
For guiding strands through the holes with less finger strain, the C.S. Osborne caning tool No.406 can be helpful during hand-caning work.
Care After Weaving
After the seat is woven and finished with binder cane, let the chair dry completely before regular use. Natural cane tightens as it dries, so avoid sitting on the chair too soon.
Keep the finished chair indoors or in a dry covered area. Avoid direct sunlight, damp storage, and high heat, because these conditions can dry, discolor, or weaken natural cane over time.
