How Reed Spline Is Used
Reed spline is installed after the cane webbing has been fitted into the chair or furniture groove. The spline is pressed into the groove over the cane webbing to help hold the material taut and secure.
This product is best used with pre-woven cane webbing, not traditional hole-to-hole hand caning. If you are unsure which spline size your chair needs, compare spline for cane chairs before ordering.
Choosing the Right Size
No.7 reed spline is a narrow size, so it should only be used when your groove measurement matches this size. A spline that is too small may not hold the cane firmly, while a spline that is too large may be difficult to press into the groove.
If your chair needs a larger spline, compare Commonwealth Basket RS872-1 Reed Spline #8 as another size option.
Installation Notes
Before installation, remove the old spline and clean the groove fully. Test-fit the new spline before applying glue so you can confirm the size and fit.
If the old spline is difficult to remove, an Osborne 405 caning chisel may help clean the groove before the new material is installed.
For holding cane webbing in place during setup, caning wedges 10 pack can be useful when your project requires wedges.
Use With Cane Webbing
This reed spline is designed to work with cane webbing projects. If you also need replacement webbing, compare 1/2 open cane webbing 18 wide before starting the repair.
Measure both the groove and the cane webbing opening carefully. The spline should fit firmly without forcing the frame apart or damaging the wood.
Care and Storage
Store unused spline in a dry indoor area away from long-term moisture and direct heat. Keep it coiled or loosely secured so it does not bend sharply before use.
During installation, handle the spline carefully and avoid cracking or splitting it. Natural reed and wood-fiber materials may have slight color or texture variations.
